How many possible Wordle answers are there? ›

Victory in one try

Since there are 2,315 possible target words in Wordle, the probability that you will guess the target in exactly one try is 1/2315 = 0.000432.

So RATIO first, then MENDS, then LUCKY. That's it. With those three choices, you'll have slimmed down the list of possible letters to the point that figuring out the solution with your final guesses becomes significantly easier. It's not a surefire winning strategy for every day's puzzle.

Sometimes it seems pretty easy and others not so much. Here are the 5 "Magic" Words that will help you solve Wordle more often than not. "Derby, flank, ghost, winch, jumps."

3. More people solve Wordle on their first guess than can be explained by chance. In the list above, we excluded first guesses that were that day's Wordle solution. That's because, about one game in every 250, a reader gets the answer right on the first try.

Most people should, on average, get it in at least 4, even on days where it is harder. Especially if you aren't making risky moves, four guesses should supply you with enough information to make a correct guess.

Luck is part of Wordle, so it's always possible to solve faster than the bot. But the bot's reliance on math instead of intuition means in the long run its paths to the answer are hard to top. There's a lot to be learned from the way the bot plays, similar to the way top chess players train by using chess programs.

In its robot brain, a handful of words — SLATE, CRANE, TRACE — are best. For human Wordle players, the most popular opening word by some margin is ADIEU. AUDIO, another four-vowel word, is the fourth-most popular. The strategy seems to make sense: Figure out the vowels, and the other letters will fall into place.

For a one seed strategy the best word is 'tales'. Using this word leads to success in over 95% of games with an average game length of 3.66 rounds. For a two seed word strategy; start with 'cones' and follow with 'trial'. They lead to success for just over 96% of target words with an average game length of 3.68 rounds.

While breaking a long streak can be disheartening and frustrating — the current longest streak is 968 days, held by multiple people in Hoquiam, Washington and Willowbrook, Illinois — it's an inevitability.

As I mentioned above, a burner word is a word you guess in Wordle (that you know is not the right answer) that you use to eliminate, or guess, several letters at a time.

Memorizing all of the past Wordle answers is nearly impossible – after all, there have now been more than 1,100 of them. But knowing what's gone before is important, because Wordle answers don't repeat – so you could easily be wasting guesses.

For instance, researchers at MIT have published a paper that they say definitively confirms the best Word to start Wordle as… SALET. If you're not sure what SALET means then you're in good company, because I didn't either. Apparently it's a 15th-century helmet, but more importantly Wordle does accept it as a guess.

One option is to recycle old words

“One possibility is we could recycle old words,” Bennett suggested. “We could throw everything back in the pot and mix it up.” She also suggested the publication could allow plurals or past tenses in the game ― “Wouldn't that be interesting?” she asked. “So there are some options.”

Each daily game uses a word from a list of 2,309 words. The smaller word list was chosen by Wardle and his partner by filtering down lists she made by categorizing all the five-letter words into those she knew, those she did not know, and those she might have known.

That's all there is to it! It sounds simple, but the game isn't easy because of the sheer number of possibilities. In Wordle, there are 2,315 possible solution words, and an additional 10,657 words that are accepted as guesses (“support words”).

We see from Figure 1 that “e” is the letter that is most frequently used (1,233 times in total), followed by “a”, “r”, “o”, “t”, “l”, “i”, “s”, “n”, “c”. The most frequently used letter in the first position is “s”, while the most frequently used letter in the second or third position is “a”.
