Lakewood Colorado history is relatively new as a city, however, within the city boundaries is a wealth of history. Lakewood was incorporated in 1969. The town was laid out by Charles Welch and W. A. H. Loveland.
The original town was located south of Colfax. Wealthy Denverites chose this area for their summer homes. The Molly Brown summer home is on the corner of Wadsworth and Yale. It sits on an acre of land and is now used for events of all kinds. It is a great example of Lakewood Colorado History.
In 1893, the first electric tramway was built. This tram connected the towns of Lakewood and Golden with Denver. It eventually became part of the Denver Tramway Corporation. The route was nicknamed the Loop.
The Remington Arms Company built an ammunitions factory in Lakewood in 1941. The largest federal government contract at the time in Colorado was awared to Remington. It is now a part of the Denver Federal Center. Today, the Federal Center is one of the largest employers in the area.
The Peterson House, now on the National Register of Historic Places, was built by Levi and Eunice Debrust between the years of 1872 and 11885. Even though named the Peterson house, the Peterson family never lived in it. It was originally located in the Bear Creek Valley. The Peterson’s owned and operated the Lakewood Farm Dairy. When the house was scheduled to be demolished, the City of Lakewood had it moved to its current location in Belmar Village.
Education was important to the early community. The Washington Heights School, built in 1898, was used by some of the first families in the area. Two of these families were the O’Kanes and the O’Briens. Its claim to fame is that it was oldest operating school in Jefferson County until 1968. It is now owned by the City of Lakewood and is used as an Arts and Crafts Center.
Colorado Christian University was also founded to further the educational interests of the community in 1914. For more information about Lakewood Colorado History, check out the Lakewood Historical Society website.
